Kirkthwaite Cottage in the Western Dales

The Cottage

Kirkthwaite Cottage was Cowgill School from the 1860s up to 1968. Following conversion it has become available since 2012 for short holiday lets. At the front door the original school bell is there to ring!

As accommodation, Kirkthwaite Cottage has comfort and plenty of character. Four bedrooms offer a range of possibilities, sleeping from 3 or 4, or up to 8 people.

It is ideal for two families as there is a double bedroom and twin room downstairs and a twin room leading off a double bedroom upstairs.

The cottage is non-smoking. We regret we do not allow dogs.

The School

The large sitting room (the school room in the past) has an open fireplace and receives full light from three fine windows. The kitchen too faces due south and is well-equipped and good for eating together at table. The bathroom is newly-furbished, largely in stone, and includes a walk-in shower and underfloor heating.

The garden is being developed cottage-style and includes plenty of space for parking.

At the back there is a sheltered courtyard with table and seating and kitchen herb garden, also storage for firewood and coal, as well as an outside toilet.

The Ground Floor

The double bedroom is decorated with the owner's linocut wallpaper, has a kingsize double bed, wardrobe, chest of drawers, storage heater and large window with views down the dale.

The twin room has two small (2ft 6) beds, with south facing window, chest of drawers, hooks with clothes hangers and storage heater.

The kitchen-dining room is well-equipped and has a dishwasher, washing machine, electric fan oven, fridge freezer, microwave and wall-mounted heater.

The sitting room has three sofas, two reclining armchairs, TV, DVD player, piano, fireplace, stereo system, games cupboard and book shelves well stocked with wildlife and local reference.

The bathroom has a walk-in shower, toilet and basin, underfloor heating and heated towel rail.

The First Floor

At the top of the stairs, the double bedroom has views of the milky way at night. There is a chest of drawers and clothes hanging rail and a plug-in radiator. Please note that access to upstairs is via an alternate-tread staircase, so not very suitable for anyone with limited mobility.

A door from the double room leads through to the twin bedroom which has a single bed with a pull-out bed, bookcase, writing desk and storage heater - and the best view in the house.

Septic Tank

The cottage waste goes into a septic tank. Please do not throw down the toilet: nappies, sanitary wear, hair, dental floss or anything other than the looroll provided as it will block and ruin your holiday.
